ton|nage «TUHN ihj», noun.
1. a) the carrying capacity of a ship, expressed in tons of 100 cubic feet. A ship of 50,000 cubic feet of space for freight has a tonnage of 500 tons. b) the amount of a commodity or other cargo shipped, loaded, unloaded, or in storage, expressed in tons of 40 cubic feet.
2. the total amount of shipping in tons; ships considered with reference to their carrying capacity or together with their cargoes.
3. a duty or tax on ships for each ton of cargo, as at a wharf or on a canal.
4. weight in tons.
